Yesterday, I walked into my local store that is basically the only one that sells Djarum Blacks and wanted to buy my delicious clove cigarette. Quick skinny on me? I’m a VERY casual smoker. I have been known to only smoke one cigarette a year, or recently, one cigarette a month. Why? I enjoy the nicotine high. It’s a fantastic, relaxing feeling and occasionally I just enjoy partaking in that. I am a very healthy individual despite my asthma (har…), but I haven’t had an attack in 3 years at this point. So, I am not a hardcore smoker and never will be. I loathe menthol cigarettes. They cut my throat up, causing me to feel like I have a throat infection for days, and they taste absolutely horrible. So Djarum were a great alternative because I would never, ever smoke menthol. What was I shocked to find? The ban included cloves as a “flavored cigarette”. One, I was shocked, because I wouldn’t consider Djarums flavored cigarettes. It’s just a different ingredient, not necessarily a chemical additive like you’d find in grape cigarettes or those variety of sticks that are also aweful.
So my immediate reaction was to be very, very angry. Come home … and look at why my beloved cigarettes can no longer be sold.
I’m obviously late on this discovery because this bill was passed;

However, I didn’t even realize it as I was living in Connecticut at the time and they were selling Djarum Blacks still. I had heard of the bill of course, but I was under a complete false assumption. My fault, in fact.
Now, only the “sale and distribution” of these cigarettes are banned. I can still in fact order them online from anywhere else in the world. Ignore that it will cost me a pretty penny. I want to know though, I want to know what makes these cigarettes so dangerous in comparison to menthol.

Update 10-10-2009: I ordered 3 cartons from overseas, only to be notified by customs in Ohio, that my package was going to be sent back because it was illegal to order cloves and have them brought into the states!
I went to the INTERWEBZ!!@@ to find this out.
I found an entire list of cigarettes and their contents here. What was shocking is that towards the bottom of that list you had amounts that exceeded the Cloves and are still able available for sale. In fact, Djarum Black at 10 mg of tar and 1 mg of nicotine are almost comparable to a pack of Marlboro which have 10 mg of tar, and .8mg of nicotine. There are no serious differences between the Kreteks (Djarum Blacks) and the disgusting menthols that Phillis Morris produces or various other cigarettes. Kreteks also do not contain the hundreds of other chemical additivies that cigarettes like Phillip Morris’s have. Not to say they are better for you, but they are far from the worse.
I have read things saying that Kreteks like Djarum Black have MORE nicotine and tar, but after reading the actual statistics, that’s obviously far from true and someone pulling things out of thin air. Lets not distort the numbers, shall we?
So what have we established? Cloves really aren’t that much worse for you. By no means are they good for you, but there is no significant difference between Cloves and Menthols. So I’m begging the question, “WHY ARE THEY BANNED?”
I’m outraged. I’m angry. I can still smoke them, yes, but after I pay the cost to have them imported. It’s not a BAN on smoking them, it’s a ban on selling them. It’s a ban that says, “Well, you could if you really wanted to, but it’s going to cost you a lot — so why not just buy the cigarettes close to home? Like this pack of Marlboros!”
I feel absolutely powerless to change what has happened as well. There isn’t a demand for kreteks. So people will continue on not caring as things around them become illegal, narrowing their choices until it’s a replica of 1984. Perhaps that is a bit extreme, but I’m awaiting to see what is next…

Update 2: I purchased a carton (10 packs) from the above website and received it in about 18 days for $45 total. This does not make them legit, it just means I got my product. I’ll be monitoring my credit report and my card like a hawk. However, so far they seem okay. I suppose this is just a fear of purchasing things online and overseas and that I study cyber security.
Update (11-4-2010) After a bit of research on the subject of whether or not it is illegal to ship flavored tobacco through the USPS, I have come up with the following article straight from the USPS.
New Mailing Rules for Tobacco Products Set for Summer
Changes to law restrict mailing of tobacco products
WASHINGTON — To comply with legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products will be subject to new mailing regulations effective June 29, 2010. The law, Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act, Public Law No. 111-154, was signed into law March 31.With only a few limited exceptions, the Postal Service will no longer be allowed to accept or transport packages containing cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products. The general mailability ban will extend to cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco. The prohibition does not include cigars.
Shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii will continue, subject to certain labeling and acceptance requirements.
The law does permit infrequent lightweight shipments by age-verified adults to recipients who are at least the age of majority for purchase of tobacco. Shipments between businesses in the tobacco industry will also be permitted, as well as cigarettes sent to consumers age 21 and above for testing or public health purposes.
Most shipments will require photo identification and age verification consistent with the minimum age requirements in the locality of destination.
With the exception of shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii, shipments are permitted only via Express Mail and, with the exception of shipments from the United States to APO/FPO/DPO destinations, will be delivered using “hold for pickup” service at the destination Post Office.
What does this mean? I’m going to break it down…
This means that cigars are the only acceptable tobacco product to be shipped through the mail. So yes, cigarettes, tobacco, and smokeless tobacco are banned. And here is the loophole. So it is OKAY to purchase small scale and infrequent cigarette purchases and you will have to go to the postal office to pick them up and have your ID available. Albeit, “small and infrequent” is really quite subjective.
So to some degree — it is still legal. What they seem to be trying to prevent is buying box loads of cloves overseas, and then selling them here for profit… at least in the case of cloves. These new restrictions are for ALL types of cigarettes. Just through USPS though…
But before you get your happy dance on thinking Fedex and UPS are alternative solutions. Think again.
FedEx Express and FedEx Ground (FedEx) have agreed to undertake changes to their business practices that will strengthen their policies prohibiting the delivery of cigarettes to consumers throughout the United States, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer announced.

We’ll i have a bit of good news i’ve heard from my local tabacco store that there banned to sell flavored cigerattes. so there going to start makeing djarum black into cigars then we will be able to by our uniqe tabacco!

So, then, you can imagine my surprise at learning this only today? My husband called me at the office to say he could not find any Djarum Specials anywhere. I thought he was crazy! That’s all we smoke (okay, yes, to all the others I know I shouldn’t smoke – but it’s not Obama’s job to save me!!!). None…anywhere….I have two packs left. I can’t smoke regular cigarettes, either and certainly not menthol. Sure, I’d like to quit, but at the point in time I want to do it. Not this week just because of Obama. I’m a little teed off at the moment! (And, hopefully you won’t mind that I chose your blog to vent, but it seemed you would understand.)
If he goes after my Starbucks frappuccinos next I’m going to have to leave the country!

Djarum cigars taste nothing like the cigarettes
I just heard the news. After switching from special lights to special, and now this? I guess I’ll be buying all I can till the ban goes into effect, then consider quiting or buying overseas,,, Canada, here I come.
This sucks… All i smoke is cloves.. I tried smoking regular cigarettes like marlboro lights but it was too weak. then i tried newports and that was just plain harsh.. i’ve been looking around everywhere, but no one has Djarums anymore..
hopefully soon i can convince my cousins from indonesia to send me back a few cartons.. ahh that be heaven for me..lol

Perfectly legal and is a good exercise in being American. What, cloves only grow in Indonesia? You can probably make a better and less unhealthy blend after a few experimental blendings.

I am also very confused and angry about the ban. I’ve been a smoker for 16 years, a heavy smoker for 11 years, a Djarum smoker for 4 years. I used to have the “smoker’s cough” majority of the time and wake up coughing every morning. Then I found my love for Djarums. I don’t have the cough anymore, I’m not out of breath when I walk anymore, I never wake up coughing anymore. More dangerous? I’ve never seen any kids smoking Djarums, most people in their 20′s don’t even know what they are.
This ban is bullshit and I’m pissed.

I am so pissed. No clove. Whatsoever. This is America? Banning one type of “flavored” cigarette but not all? I guess I’ll just have to take a day off work and drive to Canada (a 3 hour drive) and stock up. This is total BS. Why not just take it that much farther and ban all GD cigarettes. It’s pure fascism. So much for our individual freedom (not to mention consumer) rights. I guess our wise Congressmen know what’s best for us. My French blood wants me to revolt in the streets!

I totally know where yall are coming from, I smoke the clove lights and i was kind of upset when i found out I couldn’t get them anymore…from what i was told they are stopping selling “flavored cigarettes” to cut back on underage smoking…which in my opinion is just BULL! If a kid wants to smoke he/she is going to find a way to do it, and it has nothing to do with “flavored” or not…
You do realize that the Obama administration is only beginning in their control of what we can and cannot do. First our Clove ciggies and then menthols (yeah) and who knows???? OK, I’d just like to point out a fact I gleaned long ago from the Daily Show’s “America: the Book”: the executive branch is not responsible for writing laws. Congress passed this law because they want to please their constituents with teenage children. What does the “facist” Obama administration have to do with that?
All the same, including cloves in the ban — which most new smokers seem to decry as harsher rather than tastier than the whites — does seem a convenient method of shutting out the Indonesian competition in favor of quick-burning Camels and Marlboros.
Congress tried to pass the same bill when GW was in power. Guess what? George W vetoed the bill. Obama agreed with it and allowed the FDA to regulate tobacco. Just another step in the control process.

No I am not bitching, I am stating facts and love a good debate. I am also involved in the Tea Party revolution to take back OUR country.
I became a US Citizen in 2000 and am formerly from Canada. Been through gov’t controlled health care, taxing the hell out of us to pay for it (7% Goods and Services tax ((GST)) above a provincial tax of 8%), told us that we have to watch, read and listen to 90%+ Canadian content for TV, music, magazines, commercials(100%), etc.
The United States is the best country in the world when it comes to ‘FREEDOM OF CHOICE”. So why do US citizens sit on their tushies, bitch and complain, and not stand up for their rights?

By the way, the Canadian government lowered taxes on tobacco products because there was a surge in robberys for cigarettes.
I wouldn’t really call it “bitching” per say. Blogs/articles are a medium to receive information and in turn to discuss the information at hand. So my philosophy is “bitch away” for a lack of better words.
It allows for a medium of communication across a platform for which there are those who agree (or disagree) and the implications that a law like this creates (or is creating).
I do not blame just Obama. He is just a man who has given up menthol (supposedly) and supported the bill. Equivalently at fault was the 80% in the senate and the 69% in the House of Representatives.
It was an entire coup, if you will. The rights of smokers has been slowly dwindling and being taken away and some I have understood and others I did not care because I was not affected, a dangerous mind set of course.
Now I realize just how far reaching these bills are becoming that even though I am merely a casual smoker, the claws have been stuck into me and that’s quite shocking, really.
I agree that something must be done, but we have been put in a very awkward position. I’m a college student and 98% of my time is already consumed and frequently 110% (if that’s possible). I get on average 2 hours of sleep and I am one of the affected — yet I have much demanded of me and so much to lose ( for instance: choices, ironically ) that my battles are limited and I am a incapable resource. However, look at other people’s lives… it’s the same way. We’ve been undoubtedly used like cattle to support the “economic machine” and while our rights dwindle, it’s hard to get up and fight. It’s so easy to say it, but in reality, look at how much you will give up in the name of a cigarette should you refocus? Is it worth it? In my opinion, at this moment, no, even knowing the future implications.
The US Gov. is large and it feels like there is no way to put your hands into the inner workings of the vast bureaucracy. A task to large, but I have merely devised that I must shorten the task and write my Senators. Coincidentally — the one who approved, yay. That honestly feels, though, like I’ve accomplished nothing.
FYI- the ban had nothing to do with greater risks of smoking flavored cigarettes and cloves. They banned them because children/teens are more likely to start smoking these products than conventional cigarettes, and serve as a “gateway” smoke.
Unfortunately, I had just run out of Djarum Specials and found out this went into effect yesterday when I went to buy them…..the store sold me “Djarum Supersmooth” that was remaining but they are NOT the same and now I cannot find Djarum Specials anywhere, even though I read in a few places that Sept 30 was the actual cut off.
Is there ANYWHERE that will still sell Djarum Specials over the counter that anyone knows of in the Los Angeles or Orange County CA areas? I’ll even try the cigars.
It is still possible to order Kreteks online so long as it is from another country and they are not intended for sale or distribution, so that’s what I am doing. I don’t want all the chemicals that Altria adds to their cigarettes…..
im a heavy djarum smoker, my personal favorite being bali’s. ive been smoking djarums for a year now, and can say that i have enjoyed each new djarum more than the last, and now i come to find that our president has banned the one thing in the world that i can smoke and enjoy. any other brand of cigarette now is just plain nasty to me. i feel like my rights are being stepped on here.

to add to this debate, i promise you this is nothing more than Phillip Morris’s doing. I’m going to miss my cloves very much, because I just enjoyed the flavor rather than the nicotine. I’m sure there’s ways around the ban, just need to figure out how to do it as cheap as possible.
Apparently Djarum is coming out with “Cigars” with cloves. I’m not to sure yet, or if its just a rumor.

I am writing to inform you that I believe that my Constitutional Rights are being violated by the recent ban on Kreteks. I agree wholeheartedly that tobacco usage should continue to be regulated and NEVER sold to minors. However, clumping brands such as Djarum in a ban is ludicrous to say the least! Make the sale of these regulated to Liquor Stores and Smoke shops, which always check (and even scan) identification. An all out ban on this product makes no sense! If you say it’s a health issue, then ban ALL cigarettes… it’s like saying, you may consume rum, but not any produced in Jamaica or smoke any cigar but a Cuban!
I urge you to vote NO on S. 1147 aka the “PACT Act”
And I will produce a short narrative to explain my reasoning.
Let me preface this by stating that I do realize that smoking is dangerous to ones health. In fact, I have been in a tapering off progression towards quitting that has been working. I have been smoking Djarum Specials exclusively for nearly 10 years and was of legal age when I began. I have gone from more than a pack a day to less than 1/2 a pack a day (mostly due to the added taxes).
I usually purchase by the carton from the same gas station about a 20 minute drive from my house. Djarums are hard to find in the marketplace. Well since I have cut back it has been some time since I had made a purchase. Much to my dismay, I was informed that they were no longer able to order the only cigarette that I have or will ever smoke. This took me by surprise, I had no idea that I blanket ban was made. Panicked by addiction I drove to places that I knew sold them and alas, there was none to be found.
I finally tried searching the internet and found an online retailer. I was amazed by the amount of security is in place in order to place an order. They required a drivers license number, last 4 of social, address which was cross referenced… on top of that, for some reason my current address was not listed as primary so there were 4 additional questions that I had to answer that proved it was me… not only this, they require an adult signature upon delivery. They notified upon checkout that sadly, despite doing their due diligence in providing a secure check out system, that the government would likely be shutting them down.
Yes I plan on quitting, but I would like to do it on my terms! If any studies are done, I hope you note the longer burn time, as while lighting up with friends who smoke domestic brands, I would still be smoking the first one when they light up and nearly finish the second.
In fact, I will often smoke half, then save the second half for later. I smoke Djarum Specials which are never marketed especially to children! Plus they are considerably more expensive than cigarettes, and thus not going to be sought after by minors either.
Please forgive this long statement of my feelings and understand that it is wrong to blanket group an Indonesian Specialty Export and at the same time ignore domestic brands… it is hypocritical!
Wow… Yes, this definantly sucks. Like many of you i dont smoke anything, but Djarums, Specials to be exact. I’m definantly upset the we are apparently being punished for the lack of involvement of parents to explain to their children about the dangers of smoking, which I feel is pointless anyway. Everyone knows about the dangers of cigarettes. We are constantly reminded by the numerous “Truth” adds. With a completley different take on the situation, maybe this is something that will help me quit. I wont try anything else because i feel like regular cigs are too weak and horrible tasting. Feels like Obama is being a being a responsible parent and scolding me. “No!, those are bad for you!” taking away my dangerous toy. I know I still have the option of purchasing on line, but i dont think i’ll do that. Still, flavored cig banning was wrong. They were there for smokers who wanted a products that we enjoyed more or that made it easier for us to enjoy. Why not ban flavors for cough syrup, or chewable vitimans. What about alchohol? Sigh……… how lame.
The Djarum Special 12 pack of “cigars” is identical to Djarum Special 20 pack of kreteks. I’ve been a Djarum Special user for over 6 years and, although I’ve stopped smoking cigarettes and now use an e-cig, there is no discernible difference between the two (except the paper is slightly lighter in color). It’s just Djarum’s way of staying in the market. Really, try them. If there had been a smidge of difference, I’d have picked up on it immediately.

I was buying carton’s of my beloved Djarum Specials at my local Sam’s Club ….the smart ass kid there kept telling me (every two weeks over the past summer) “Hey lady – you better start buying American Cigarettes- they are taking those off the market because they are reallllly bad for you” – To which I replied “Bullchit” !!
I would not buy into his scare tactics until I showed up two weeks ago and he said “you shoulda stocked up- we are not ALLOWED to order them any more” …..AAuugghhhh

I , like most folks here, was under the impression that the “Obama ban” was for “cherry” cig’s …..
WTF?? Cloves ?? Come on now……..
I was/am a former Marlboro smoker- I smoked the cloves in the 80′s (I’m 45) when they were fashionable ….then throughout the ending of the 20th century – I bought and smoked them “on occasion” – I would keep them in the freezer, and use them as a “dessert” smoke.
About 2 yrs back – I quit my (ugh) Marlboro Habit- 3 months l8r ,I started back up with my beloved cloves. I prefer the specials as they burn verrrry slow , and I can make a carton last for 2 weeks – hence spending 50% less than I was with Phillip Morris. Plus the fact that they do not stink up my clothing /cars /or house like those stinking “Burrows” did – I can’t even be around peeps now who smoke “regular” cigs …..It makes me sick – and hurts my eyes.
What am I gonna do now …..?? My friendly guy that owns the local smoke shop (he charges me 74$ a carton—–Sam’s used to charge 63$)is oblivious ….I don’t think he knows the new law clearly ….because when I told him (yeah , I know – I’m too honest) – he said I could “buy all I want there” ….
But I don’t want to PAY almost 40$ @ week again to smoke ….has anybody found a good website to buy them from yet ?? Our beloved cloves….??
I noted the Specials were not offered in European smokeshops , but they instead have “clove brown paper” Djarum’s …and the packs only come 14 in a pack …..I have not gone as far as to order them ….but I am sure there are huge import fee’s as well……Are they even the same ciggerttes??

What is so dumb above all things is that the ban on clove flavored djarums are to help prevent kids from smoking because of the attraction because of the flavor. Elizabeth – the 12 cigars are NOT the same as the 20 pack of specials. I had some specials left from a cigar shop who continued to sell his inventory under the counter. We all took a taste test, and everyone could easily tell the difference. The only good thing is that the cigars burn longer, but they don’t taste as good.
I’m in NorCal & smoked Djarum Lights or Djarum Specials when Lights were unavailable. Now, they’re all unavailable. Boo-frickity-hoo!
And, yes, it’s sad. However, & luckily, here on my side of the pond there was an overlap in most smoke shops & some gas stations (petrol shops) from selling the standard Djarum 20-pack over to the Djarum Special “cigar” 12-pack, so I’ve never really been w/o some form of Djarum. Funny, one of the shops I frequent knows me as an avid Djarum smoker, so they saved me my Lights behind the counter. Then, when those ran out, I went to Djarum Bali Hai, which are very similar to the Lights. I tried the Djarum Black 12-pack…the flavour’s okay, but if I’m forced (which apparently I AM!), the Djarum cigars are pretty fkg close to the original Specials, so I can’t really complain that much. I empathize w/ all of you, though, how fascism seems to be becoming the norm w/ regulating what we are “allowed” to do/have/purchase, etc. Most specialty cigarette shops or “smoke” shops should have Djarum Special 12-pack cigars. They’re really no different from the original Specials: ever so slightly a bit wider (thicker) & the paper is slightly lighter in colour now. The taste is still the same, comparatively, but seem a bit stronger is all. So all you die-hard Kretek smokers should appreciate the Djarum “cigar” if & when you finally get the chance w/ them!
BTW: my lungs have never bled from smoking cloves…old wives tale? Hmmm…so yes, I was quite miffed at the fact our sweet Djarums were banned from our shops. Some of our local cig-shop owners tell me they will soon be selling all flavours (Supers, Lights, Cherry & Vanilla, etc…), but only in the “cigar” 12-pack form/varieties. Good Luck!

I found many sites that sell Djarum that claim they ship them inconspicuosly, but I have yet to come across one that actually has Djarum Lights..the ONLY ones I smoke. I smoke a lousy 3-4 cigs a day, I have no other vices left in life since I am subject to random drug checks due to being on Percocet for chronic pain. All I want, as an ADULT living in a “free” country (yeah, right) is to be able to, smoke a f’n clove! Obama is a communist scum bag. Blaming the sweet flavor of cloves for kids smoking is bullshit. The first cig most of them pick up is a friggin’ Marlboro or Newport. And why not ban flavored alcohol since that is also sweet and enticing to the little bastards whom are taking away my right to a damn clove? They’re all out there slugging down Peach Schnapps and I can’t have a clove!

I too came across Djarum Black clove cigarettes and was confused as to why I could not get and answer as to why the Black was no longer being sold? I had to google to find out the answer. I agree with your basic observations and warning to Americans to get involved with government and how it works. I don’t know whether or not we will at least have online access to it [no FDA bans that I am aware of], but I know is that my representatives that voted on this piece of legislation will here from me. I know that I encourage all Djarum Black smokers, all “flavored” cigarette smokers, any smoker who agrees with my/our disgust and disappointment in banning the sale and distribution of Djarum Black, to google this bill and contact your representative on this bill (a short email will do) congratulate them for voting NO. or ask to register a complaint about them voting YES. Also let them know that you want the ban on Djarum Black clove cigarettes removed. The truth of this matter is that we could go back and forth by posting and reading comments about this ban, but it’s banned! This ban can only be removed by law, so start googling this ban and contact your rep! By the way, I am trying out other Djarum clove cigarette, my preference still remains the Black.

Once you have a chance to read through all of the posts w/in this blog, I trust you’ll find that many acknowledge & accept & some even acclaim to all four points you bring up in your post. Speaking personally, I’ve known that kreteks are not only made of ground/powdered cloves, but, as well, made up of shredded tobacco. I really don’t think the folks here ever believed they were smoking cigarettes purely made up of 100% cloves. At least that’s my take on many who’ve posted here. We’re all adults here, yes? Thus, I’m certain we all know that smoking ANYTHING is not all too healthy of an act. Those of us that do smoke cloves or otherwise, simply choose to do so & are a bit ticked off that our gov’t has somehow found a way to thwart our right to chose.

Guess what? I just bought a 12-pack of Djarum Bali Hai “cigars”!!! Currently, I can only find these at my local tobacco shop. They are very much the same as the old Bali Hai smokes except they are wider & the paper is brown. I think you just might like ‘em. Good luck on finding them in your neck o’ the woods!

Good question, discorati. I have found a number of sites claiming that while purchasing true clove cigarettes in the US is illegal, purchasing from overseas sites is not, according to the new law. All ship in “discreet packaging” as well. Disturbingly, though, most offer a “Bali” payment method that involves using your credit card to pay via a site meant for prepay for Bali and Indonesian hotels and businesses by way of the Australia National Bank. A little too roundabout and under the proverbial table for me.

I am appalled that cloves and a small handful of other imports were targeted by this bill while domestic flavored tobaccos were left on the shelves. As has been stated by others over and over again, cloves are by far not an instigator for youth smoking. The blatant favoritism and obvious violation of the WTO is more than galling.
There is a smoke shop local to me that carries the new “clove cigars,” including Specials, Black (in 3 forms), and Bali Hai. The tobacco has changed to cigar style instead of the usual cigarette tobacco, which greatly overwhelms the lesser amount of included clove. Also, for those of us who smoked Djarum Specials, there is no longer the addition of flavor to the filter, which leaves a major taste difference. The taste is nowhere near the same, and neither is the smell.
In a country where we are supposed to be free to choose for ourselves, and where (it has been pointed out quite…shall we say?…thoroughly) we have an enormous menu of items with which to kill ourselves at whatever pace we so choose, it amazes me that one tiny sector of said items has been targeted for removal. Most studies peg us at comprising 0.4% of all tobacco users. Seems a huge effort – almost 2 months of Congressional debate and endless rewrites to come to the final form of this law – to inconvenience a miniscule sect of the American public and one giant, uninvolved-in-the-conflict-of-the-moment overseas corporation. It makes me think that we were the test group. How much fallout has the government seen from us, and, in light of this lack, what larger subject will they choose to tackle next?
BTW, here is a link to the general rules and regs regarding tobacco imports. Figured anyone trying to order online would appreciate it, instead of having to dig through the bureaucracy. Looks like anyone who had their shipment returned is having issues with state laws, not national.

I am equally pissed about the ban of the “flavored cigarettes”!!! I have been an avid smoker of the Cloves for 2 years now and love them. Yes they have come out with the Clove “cigars” and I find it hard to believe that they could be anything close to the “original” Clove cigarettes. Smoked them and they indeed taste like a cigar to me. Don’t smell as strong as they did, don’t taste the same, don’t crackle when you smoke them…just not the same! I spend $7.90 per pack on the Cloves and have not ever seen a younger person smoke them, unless they got one from someone to try. It is my opinion that people that smoke the cloves are from a different type of smoking circle..those who have some knowledge of cigars and tasty tobacco products and search out new and different types of tobacco products. The whole ban is just stupid. I guess it boils down to someone telling me what kind of cigarettes I can and cannot smoke!
I prefer the Djarum Super above all Djarum products. I ordered a carton from Clovecigaretteshop.com The package was discretely wrapped and passed customs with no problems. I live in California. It took about a week for delivery. I actually prefer the Indonesian cloves over the ones they made for the US. I am happy with my purchase, and am ordering again tomorrow.

Ok…I have smoked specials for 25 years, off and on. In the late 1980′s, they were banned for about a year due to the fiberglass which is what made lungs bleed. When they came back, fiberglass free, lungs stopped bleeding. I never had the issue as I didn’t ever smoke too much as a teenager. I like Djarum specials because they don’t smell horrible. I do a lot of road trips and they keep me awake by giving me something to do. I am appauled at the ban…especially since Djarum does NO advertising. Kids need to be taught just like we were that smoking is bad and then make their own decisions. There is no reason for this ban except that the government wants to control something else. Believe me…as a parent of a teenager…if my son decided to start smoking….he wouldn’t care what he smoked as long as his friends thought he was cool doing it. That’s where the government needs to focus….hanging out with the right crowds!
Random tidbit, but the Djarum Cigars aren’t all that bad, heh heh heh… they taste very similar, the only thing I don’t like is the smell they leave on your hands, and they aren’t quite as flavorful, but they are nice.

I bought a pack of the cigars (blacks, regular) yesterday, and must say they’re not bad. They’re a little too strong to belt and inhale to your toes like I want to-but you can get some good tobacco and clove flavor and enjoy on he palette and then inhale some smoke in smaller amounts to savor. $8.01 with tax for a pack of 12, but one cigar lasted for at least 15 minutes, perhaps 18. It was satisfying, but I’m still going to try to mail order some kreteks. Anyone else try the cigars?

@Jo: I actually got the cigars as well but I must say I do not enjoy them nearly as much. The more I’ve smoked them the more I’ve noticed how much the smell sticks to you. I hate smelling like burnt tobacco.
So a local tobacco shop was hoarding for me and I was buying the cartons of Djarum Special at $70 a carton, and the owner said he would be able to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Then Tuesday I go in and he says an ignorant clerk put them out on the display shelf and they of course sold out.
So I’m buying one last carton of Djarum Specials from Ed today. He answered quickly and the arrangements were conveniently made. But paying $140 for a carton makes it official, I have lost my mind. Especially since he offered them for $115 yesterday.

The new cigars are not like the old cigarettes. The cigarettes were rolled in paper, the cigars are rolled in tobacco leaves. As such they have a strong and harsh cigar smell that pervades your skin and clothes.

The shipping took about a week. The cigarettes were better than the ones that used to be available domestically, in my opinion. They had a better taste, I feel. I am ordering again in 2 days. The total cost for the carton of ten packs of 16 clove cigarettes was $49.50. That cost includes factoring in the trackable shipping cost. A pretty damn good price, if you ask me. Sure as hell beats the $120.00 to $150.00 per carton that Ed is charging……what a joke!!

After we agree to COD, I suggested that we speak on the telephone and when he phoned he thought I was someone else and proceeded to talk about a different deal and that the only had x number left which was weird because she promised that amount to me. Anyway, after I reminded him of our email conversation, he refocused again. 10 days later, still nothing in the mail. I have tried other cigarettes from Palmal(sp?) to Marlboro even menthol’s in a multitude of brands. The majority of the time I could not finish the pack and often found them to be harsher & caused me to cough more. The saddest part, or so I feel, is that when I found a pack I was able to smoke, I found myself smoking more and purchasing a pack more often than I ever did with my cloves.
I did not and do not smoke them more because I enjoy them because I do not. When I purchased the Djarum Blacks I would smoke 1 to 2 cigarettes a day where I am going through 5+ now. It all makes me very sad but I do not want to illegally purchase my precious cloves. I have looked around my area in the stores that once sold Blacks, and they are not/do not carry the cigars. I guess in the end my question is does anyone HONESTLY know if it is against the law to buy Djarum Black (cigarettes not cigars) via on-line & have them imported over to the US?

Woot! Just got my delivery of a case of Djarum Super from http://www.clovecigaretteshop.com ! I had run out and was smoking those rank cigars. Ahhhhh…..the sweet clove goodness of the Supers direct from Indo.
I was surprised as well. I had no idea that there was a bill passed, but then again I don’t follow politics. Now I’m not a heavy smoker, I usually only smoke during social situations, but I found that the clove cigarettes are easier to smoke than regular tobacco. Like so many of you it irritates the throat and it’s just too harsh. Menthols? Yeah I tried those, but it’s still the same. I usually smoke the Djarum Gold or Vanilla as the taste is quite delicious, but where can you buy them overseas? It was sad when I learn the new about the new law…(I am in CT just like you)…..I was ready to smoke one of my last Black Cloves when my friend started screaming and asking where i got my cigarrettes….after I told her where, she gave me the news and we went on the search for the last packs in town to only find out that the only place where I could get them, their shipment had being stoped!! I only got to buy a few of the light ones but for me is not the same….I am not a smoker…however I enjoy having my cloves on social gatherings when having a drink or when stressed out….I did get the new Blacks but is not the same…i miss the sweet taste that the filter used to leave on my lips and the taste of the cigarrette it self…is definately NOTTT the same! When I first tried the Djarum Black cigars a few weeks ago, I thought my body was reacting strangely to them because I hadn’t smoked in a while. Now that I’ve scrolled through this forum I can finally see that the cigars are indeed completely different than the old cigarettes. Smoking them is very harsh, and I almost feel sick after I smoked just one. They got me high (almost as high as marijuana) but not a good kind of high…a sick, dizzy kind of high.

On September 22, in accordance to the Eshoo law, all flavored cigarettes will be illegal. This includes fruit flavored cigarettes, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon, and clove. But now menthol? Of course not.
Of course not. Major tobacco industries have been lobbying to rid the nation of flavored and clove cigarettes for years because well, they are losing money to them. Major companies like Phillip Morris don’t distribute flavored cigarettes in the U.S, except menthol flavors. However, clove cigarettes are imported mainly from Indonesia.
The reason cited for the bill is to discourage underaged smoking. The lawmakers say they feel that flavored cigarettes appeal more to underaged smokers and people who never smoked before. If this is true, then why are menthol cigarettes still legal? Because menthol cigarettes make up about a quarter of $52 billion in annual sales for Phillip-Morris alone. It’s pocket change to lobby for this bill to be passed in order to protect their interests. Aside from that, the U.S has their own hind-ends to look after. Even though Congresswoman Virginia Foxx clearly stated that this is a vialation of WTO.
“According to WTO rules…an imported ‘good’ (clove cigarettes) should receive treatment that is ‘no less favorable than that provided to a domestic good.’ ”

With all of the clove shops online to purchase from, the one annoying thing is that none of them have Djarum Lights, Vanilla, Special, or Special Lights. I have even emailed Djarum twice and never got a response. And, I’ve also emailed some of the links listed above inquiring as to why these cloves are not sold and never get answers. Does anyone know if there are any Canadaian tobacco stores that carry them, that sell online, and will ship to the US? I have looked but can’t find anything.

Hey I recently ordered a carton from clovescigarettesstore.com and I’ve yet to be notified of my order status. I live in the US and I made my payment via Bali and it said it was approved. I tried calling their contact number several times during their business hours and haven’t had anyone pick it up. I’m a little worried, customs and fraud are riding my mind. Did they make any attempt to contact you or update your status? I sent an email asking if my order has been sent and I’m waiting for a reply. The BAD news. A new law was just signed on the 1st. I believe the law will prohibit online tobacco sales and make it illegal to ship tobacco thru the mail. It goes into effect this July. Online stores are trying to find some loopholes but…….AGGGG

Customs read me a list of the rules that pertain to cigarettes. It can also be found somewhere on their website
Any cigarette coming into the states NEEDS to have the same warning labels that we require on packs made here. Packs out of Indonesia don’t have warning labels
So, if customs finds that, they will keep them. Or take them home and smoke them.
There is also a ‘copyright’ law. The maker of the cigarette has the power to decide who can export/import their product…or some crap like that. well then there’s hope for the people getting caught in customs, you can get it back, so thats good, I ordered my specials on 4/3 and it is now 4/23, I guess they were delayed since they had so many orders I am just waiting and wishing they’d get here soon. what else can I do, I could only find one site that sold them any ways.
jaMIE…..the country of origin doesn’t matter. It might be that the cigarettes from Spain have some kind of warning/health label on them but there are at least 5 other reasons customs can confiscate them if they choose to. The reasons I cited above are just rules of the customs department and the FDA…..they apply to any cigarettes being imported into the US from any country.
I sure do hope yours get here. I hope mine do as well. It is a gamble though. I just wish I ordered my 2 cartons separately….so 1 might have gotten thru faster if they other was nabbed

You all do know that the Djarum “clove cigars” are the EXACT same thing, just in a smaller pack. Labeling them as cigarillos circumvents the flavoring law. I have seen them at countless places, and am looking at a pack I bought two nights ago right now.

I concur…I like them, however, & I smoke them…they are not the same, tho. They have a distinctive cigar-tobacco flavour under the sweet clove. They now have, uh, get this: “MILD” in the 12-pack cigars. Looks like the old “Lights” pack. They can’t put “Lights” on cigars…it’s against the rules. So, I’ve since gone to Djarum MILD Cigars & they‘re not so bad/harsh & true to their claim of ‘mild’…very mild. Djarum cigars are awful. They are harsh and taste strongly of tobacco, you can barely taste the cloves, and they leave you smelling burnt like cigarettes (sometimes worse than).
Even if they “were the same” it doesn’t actually solve the problem at hand — the banning of flavored cigarettes (except for menthol). That’s the issue. Not if there is an acceptable substitute.

Got my Specials off ebay and this was the real deal. I have to let everyone know that the cigars should be avoided at all cost and possibly banned. I called the distributor in Moorpark. They claimed they were no longer dealing in the cigarettes….AT ALL. They said because they were on US soil that they couldn’t even be the supplier to Mexico. So…that makes me think that the smokes we are getting are from an old stockpile, which at some point will run out
Well then I guess we need to find out where Moorpark was receiving the original cigarettes from and find out if they are still being produced and packaged like the original 20 packs. As far as I know that was the way they where packaged for US only. When I purchased Specials in Europe they came in a 16 pack. I can’t believe people that enjoyed cloves are actually purchasing the cigars, there disgusting. Don’t buy the cigars and djarum will find a way to distribute the original cigarettes. Djarum had actually started a lawsuit (i think because the new law broke trade agreements perhaps?) but later dropped it. If I followed the timeline right, they dropped the suit when they found the cigar loophole. So, in other words, you might be right FightForYourRight
In Indonesia they sell Mr Browns which are nearly identical to the specials. I ordered some and loved them (though I believe their tar and nic content is a little higher) My last order or 2 cartons got caught by customs though. Its been over a month now and they haven’t even sent me a letter alerting me to the ceasing of my shipment. I find that outrageous!
At the VERY least customs should be REQUIRED to notify the intended recipient of any piece of mail they confiscate. I feel like it just vanished. If it hadn’t had tracking on it I never would have known they were even sent. And where does all that confiscated merchandise go anyway??? Seems suspicious to me

Well I ordered from spain.tobaccoonline.co.uk- the cigarettes come from Spain and guess what, they suck ! The packaging is all the same, a few Spanish warnings added to the front. I opened them up they look the same BUT gone was the smell of cloves and when I smoked one gone was the taste of cloves. It smells and tastes like pure tobacco with NO cloves, how disappointing. I have written to the company asking for a refund and venting my disappointment at the fraud!
So far E-bay were excellent although he seems to be vacationing
@jaMIE : I can’t really find Djarum Special in here since a friend at the company told me that it was made for exports only. I only can get Djarum Black (all kind of flavors), Djarum Super (have almost the same taste as Djarum Special) and any other Indonesian brand cigarettes. For Djarum Super it come in 2 version, a pack of 12 and 16, 12 I can get you for $20 a carton (10 pack=120 ciggs) & 16 for $25 a carton (10 pack=160) and the EMS rate for US-Canada-Brazil is $22.99. From the EMS weight limit I probably can combined 2-3 carton. It’s up to you, I’m just here to offer you a hand, and if you’re scared of being ripped off, lets use paypal

I’m trying to get some clove cigarettes for my girlfriend’s birthday. She smoked Djarum Lights (20 to a pack, off white packaging) clove cigarettes before the ban. She occasionally smokes the clove cigarellos (sp?) now, and hates them. What overseas Djarum clove cigarette product is closest to US pre-ban Djarum lights?
Also, has anyone dared order cigarettes through the mail now that it is illegal for the USPS to deliver them?
Mike, if you can find ANYONE selling Djarum Lights, let me know. I must have emailed every distributor outside the US. NONE of them have the Djarum Lights. I quit smoking in February and still had 3 packs left of those lovely cloves. Well, stress got the best of me, and, suffice it to say, that there is but one of those said ‘lovely cloves’ left. And, I will smoke the hell out of that baby on my birthday on Thursday and dance around until there is nothing left but the filter…then cry like a little bitch with a skinned knee.

Most companies ship by USPS….at least thats my experience with Indonesian companies. Its now illegal to ship cigs by US mail and they can be confiscated no questions asked if found by customs

So glad you were able to kick the habit, however the point is, do you really want the government to be able to dictate which products you are able to buy in the “free market”? Especially when it is being run by special interests and hypocrisy?
If you try and get them shipped into the country customs will confiscate them, a couple of my buddies had this happen to them.

To ALL,i’ve been readding this blodg,i guess thats watit is called, antway,ive been smoking djarum specials for 25years,i found out a way last year on how to get my smokes,because i live in san diego, i drive 5mins to san ysisdro and i go to the Duty Free store and buy a carton for only $25.00.they take me to the border and i get in line to cross back over to the U.S.the whole process takes about 30mins (was the lonest)i take as many friends with me as i can,cuz your only aloud 1 carton per person,so i take 5 people and i come hm with 5 cartons,been doing this for a year,i ran out yesterday, went to go get more, but it seems they have been told the same, to sell what they have in there invatory, after that no more.i think there might be a way for us to get our smokes doing it this way,i am gona make some calls today and go down to the warehouse and see wats going on.

I’m not going to have people come to this blog to find information about the ban and what other people are doing only to be potentially swindled or have their information used improperly from an un-verified source. I’m sorry if this is not true of you, but if you have a product to sell — I suggest you find an alternative means or get me some verification e-mails from MULTIPLE satisfied customers… and don’t forget I’m a computer nerd, so you’ll have to be smarter than I am to trick me.

Last time I read when Courtney wrote it, there was no mention of independant delivery companies. I think if we can find someone who’ll use UPS, Fedex, DHL, then we may get them. Well….my friend just got back from a border run. There are ‘some’ blacks left in mexico. He went EVERYWHERE and there were NO specials to be seen. Except for a guy he found on the street who was smoking one. He finally got him to part with his last half pack of cloves for $20 *lol* I think there were 10 or so in the pack. I will be cherishing each and every one of them

you can still buy them on line. it will probably take a awhile to get trough customs and you shouldn’t buy a lot at one time or close together or else customs might put a hold on your orders but if you only get a cartoon or two every once in a while you should be fine. http://www.indonesia-cigarettes.com/ this is a pretty good site. they have a lot of different brands and you can even get individual packs to try them.

New Mailing Rules for Tobacco Products Set for Summer
Changes to law restrict mailing of tobacco products
WASHINGTON — To comply with legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products will be subject to new mailing regulations effective June 29, 2010. The law, Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act, Public Law No. 111-154, was signed into law March 31.
With only a few limited exceptions, the Postal Service will no longer be allowed to accept or transport packages containing cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products. The general mailability ban will extend to cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco. The prohibition does not include cigars.
Shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii will continue, subject to certain labeling and acceptance requirements.
The law does permit infrequent lightweight shipments by age-verified adults to recipients who are at least the age of majority for purchase of tobacco. Shipments between businesses in the tobacco industry will also be permitted, as well as cigarettes sent to consumers age 21 and above for testing or public health purposes.
Most shipments will require photo identification and age verification consistent with the minimum age requirements in the locality of destination.
With the exception of shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii, shipments are permitted only via Express Mail and, with the exception of shipments from the United States to APO/FPO/DPO destinations, will be delivered using “hold for pickup” service at the destination Post Office.
I did a bit of research today when I should have been studying for a certification exam and updated this blog post. Hope this helps! For those of us who are small time purchasers … we should really be fine.

For a while there was a way to get them out of Mexico but this option has dried up this past month.
I am speculating at this point but I think the supply they had in Mexico was the OLD supply from Moorpark California. I called the Moorpark distributor last year. They claimed they were no longer dealing with the “cigarettes”. The new law made it so they couldn’t sell, distribute or ship any of them any longer. The plant changed over to the “cigars” and that’s the only product they dealt with
Over the past year all the cigs I got coming out of Mexico were stamped “Moorpark.” That’s why I’m assuming it was all old stock
I had several contacts in Mexico getting me Specials since the ban last year. This past month each and every one of them claims the same thing…..there are NO MORE SPECIALS in Mexico. Zip. Nadda. None. My friend even drove down there for me and searched all of Tijuana. Every store owner said the same thing….there are none left in Mexico. I called every duty free shop. I’ve had friends call stores inside Mexico. Again….no Specials anywhere. Same thing with Canada. They issued the same flavored tobacco ban there as well, only there’s also includes small cigars!
The Blacks are headed for the same fate. There are still ‘some’ left but everyone’s supply is running out quickly. When the supply of Blacks run out, Mexico will be selling only the cigars like we do here
They do sell Specials in Europe but they cost a small fortune. Our dollar is weak compared to the Pound and the Euro. I checked last week and found some for about $140 per carton. Too big a risk seeing that they might not make it out of customs :’(
Beware though. Someone here mentioned the European Specials they ordered were different…..not very clovey at all. The Specials were a very American cigarette tailored to our market from my understanding.

I live in Australia and a pack of Black here cost around 20 dollars! I have been getting them online for like 10-15 times now. Was held by custom once and I paid like 70 bux for tax and they return me the djarums. This place call CiggiesWorld is pretty reliable and they take paypal too. Other online shop only take money orders and western union so I was a bit reluctant buying from them.
Immigrated from Malaysia to the Netherland, sometimes I find it frustrated when I have to smoke other than clove cigarettes .. I used to order from belgian-based online shop but it was all too expensive while most Indonesian online shop take money orders, western union or balipayment which we need to send confirmation email etc and its a bit complicated .. but I also find another online cigs shop which accepts paypal but cheaper than CiggiesWorld..Ive just received my 10th parcels today, but the thing is, the website is pretty basic, you have to order by email instead of direct order like CiggiesWorld .. it cost me around $114 for 3 cartons of blacks and ems shipment.
Bear in mind though, sometime they run out of stock and you have to wait until wednesday … but so far, I like ordering cigarettes from them!!

It is LEGAL to import for personal use so long as you aren’t buying more than 4-5 cartons at a time. Customs cannot holdl them. Ive purchased 12 cartons this year for myself and a friend in small orders.
Clovecigarettesonline.com and clovecigarettestore.com are two that I have used. I have to use alternate payment services like AlertPay, though if you email the vendors themselves they will sometimes allow you to buy “coffee” from them and pay for it via Paypal.

Well people,i actually drove a couple of hours to get to my Duty Free Store last week,(& took a friend, so i could bring back more cartons!)when i got there, All the Djarum Specials where Gone,except for a few loose packs,(5)I spoke with the Manager there,he said they will be getting another “Shipment” (2 cases,@ 30-50 Cartons per case.)on Monday the 3rd.i had my Gardener go down and get them, but he said they were out..,Anyways, they did and Still have lots of Djarum BLACKS, so if ANYone wants some let me know,(lovekiller?).i guess i will find out tomorrow about the Djarum Specials,( keep our fingers crossed! )

Yeah, some of us did the research. It doesn’t matter, it sounded like a good idea to him and he signed it. The only thing bad about the act is the banning of cloves. THey were protecting the idiots from themselves by stating a “light”(by flavor not by you’ll live an extra six monthes) cannot be called a light for it imposes a healthier cigarette. No it means a preforated filter dumbass for a lighter taste like menthols. Ooo speaking of menthols the menthol cigars are pretty good. I think I could deal with it easier if they came 20 to a pack and had super versions.

Just order them direct from Bali. Some of the merchants use paypal, your per carton cost for 16pk packages is between 19 and 22.00 and shipping can vary. I get them for an average of about 25-27 a carton including shipping costs and it takes about 14 days. There is NOTHING illegal about importing them for personal use so long as you aren’t buying 15 cartons at a time.

I have been “fuming” about this BS since the day I stopped in at my local smoke shop and was told about the ban by the owner. Just ANOTHER brick in the wall and an invasion of my rights as a 50-year-old woman to make my own choice about tobacco products and pursue my own brand of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They still sell them at all local tobacco shops in Texas. I have vanilla flavor and regular. I looked online and they sell them for 30 bucks. I still get them here for $7.
If they are still selling them in Texas they are risking their store being raided for contraband. Unless they are the ‘little cigars’ they are illegal in the US to resell. Them’s the breaks, at least until Indonesia’s case before the WTO gets heard.

Wanted to warn you all of my last experience ordering. I had ordered from this place several times in the past and had luck. This last time, I ordered April 16th. Paid the next day by Western Union and emailed them confirmation. I noticed they hadn’t updated my order from ” awaiting payment” to ” processing” It took them til the 21st to update my order and email that they got my payment.
Usually they send out the order a day after payment is processed. I emailed. Heard nothing. Emailed again…nothing. It is now the 29th. They STILL haven’t sent the order and haven’t replied to my multiple emails. At this point I doubt they will be sent.

Just order online and use Paypal or Western Union to pay. There are a few reputable sellers that charge around 15.00 for up to 4 cartons, so for around 100.00 you get 4-5 cartons. They are the 16 pks and not the 20 pks but you still come out ahead.

They are called Supers, now.
No Specials and Supers are two different flavors they make. Supers come in standard 20 pack and a long 16 count pack. They have two different flavors and come in two different boxes and do not look alike. Supers are white standard looking with a gold band and red stripe in it. Specials are brown on brown camo looking with a brown filter tube.
Then they are being mis labeled by the Indonesian vendors, then. *shrug* I don’t smoke Specials, so it doesn’t affect me one way or the other as it is.

Hi all…just wondered into this site and read alot of it. I was receiving my cloves (my preference is tea) for over a year with the ***store source…but bumming out big time as I have had my last three shipments (8 cartons, 4 cartons and 2 cartons) returned to sender in the last 8 weeks. Tried different shipping locations, amounts and vendors but to no avail. Seriously considering making my own but really miss my djarum teas – any advice???
I just got four cartons last week from my vendor, and it only took about 7 days for them to arrive. No problems with customs or anything. I don’t know why yours keep getting returned. Ive been ordering from the same overseas vendor for over a year.

At those prices, per pack? Is he mentally retarded? Note, in his feedback, nobody is buying cloves, just other stuff. I can order cloves from Indo and have them in less than 14 days, and I don’t pay more than around 30 a carton, including shipping.
@Cedric: I guess it’s because the ones he’s offering — especially the Cherry, but also the Supers and Bali — are extremely scarce at this point. I haven’t seen any Indo retailer selling any of these, nor read of anyone successfully receiving them, and believe me I’ve searched high and low. My personal fave is the Cherry and only England sells them online currently, but for some reason they’re not allowed to ship tobacco to the U.S.
It’s a bit steep but for some of us (me included), it’s worth it.
…plus he’s actually based in the U.S. and again, for most of us here, the risk of customs making off with our shipment with no notice or Western Union payments disappearing into thin air with no recourse isn’t worth it. I’d much rather deal with someone who actually has a domestic area code.
Ive not had any shipment confiscated by customs in a year of ordering (some 25 cartons), and I don’t use WU to pay. The one time I did, that was easily rectified by my bank in about 20 minutes to get my money back because I had a receipt from WU showing pickup of the money, and I had a receipt for purchase.
He may be domestic, but he’s taking people to the cleaners at no risk to himself-cloves are LEGAL in the US, you just can’t be a retailer and resell them. Technically, what he’s doing is illegal, and what I do is perfectly fine. Domestic possession and consumption was never made illegal by the law as it was written by the FDA.
The best part is that if you have 1/2 a wit, you don’t label the package as CIGARETTES OMG!!! and the EMS/USPS courier from my local post office delivers them to me, at my house, as part of their daily rounds for delivering EMS priority mail packages. The longest I had to wait was around 18 days last year when the postal workers were striking on the coasts and it was around Christmas.
I’m not knocking what you’re doing Cedric, again it’s personal preference. I too have ordered from Indo several times (inacigar.com) with no issues getting my shipment, save for a 3-5 day wait at customs. Never been scammed out of money either. I was just speaking for the handful of commenters above that have gone through and that happen to be in search of the Balis or other super-scarce Djarum varieties.
For me, I haven’t seen the Cherrys in YEARS so it makes sense for me. If I still want the original blacks, which I will, I just order from Indo like I’ve been doing and the price comes out to roughly $5 a pack after shipping. For these, I liken the experience to driving two hours upstate to that one convenience store that still sells Crystal Pepsi (terrible analogy but you get what I’m sayin’)

There’s just no way I’m spending that much money on a carton of supers. 300 bucks there’d better be four of them bitches in a box. When I do get some money, I’m going to start stocking up on supers and specials and maybe blacks on a small scale.
That’s what I did. I bought a couple of cherrys from him and to me, it was worth it. I still order original blacks from inacigar.com but just having a few packs from him for variety, especially since I can’t find them ANYWHERE else, was worth the extra $$$.
This whole business of searching outside the U.S. for my djarums is so bullshit! ….especially since I haven’t had one in a minute. My understanding is that Specials aren’t imported into North America any longer. That includes, Canada, the US and Mexico.
From what I have read and heard, European Specials taste a little different as well, so dont be surprised if you order from England or Spain and they arent as sweet.

Ive read that the Cherry’s are only sold in Japan and Europe. As for the WTO ruling, only parts of the whole act were ruled illegal. The WTO ruled that, ultimately, the FDA has the right to ban substances under the color of protecting public health, therefore, arbitrarily ruling on some brands over others still falls within it’s overall legally accepted responsibility in the US.

Yeah the few sites I’ve ever seen Cherrys sold were either in England or Australia, but they’re always listed as out of stock. That’s why I jumped at the chance of getting my hands on them with the private seller I linked above.
As far as the WTO ruling…hmmm…I wanna jump for joy but fear it’d be preemptive, since it’s a “mixed” ruling. Guess we’ll have to wait to see how it plays out. On another note, inacigar is also a reliable site if you want your Djarums. On average it takes me about 10 days to receive my order from the time I press ‘submit payment’.

If you are still selling locally at 70.00 a carton, people can get them cheaper (approximately 4 cartons/100.00) and only have to wait 7-14 days to receive them if they just buy them direct from Indonesia. Most of those sellers accept Paypal or Moneygram now, too, so no money hassles. Even though the cartons are the 16 per pack instead of 20 per pack 70.00 is still kind of ridiculous. I was ordering extra every time, charging shipping plus a convenience fee for a few people at work and it still came no where near 70.00 a carton. Your supplier is ripping you off.

But every site I’ve emailed in Indonesia say they do not sell “Djarum Specials” because they don’t sell that type in Indonesia. And they can not recommend something similar because they have never see “Specials”. I can’t even find a European site and I know they sell them there because I’ve bought them in the Netherlands, I think they where a 16 pack instead of 20, but still “Specials”. Any help appreciated but I cannot STAND the “Djarum Specials” cigars!!!
If Indonesia doesn’t sell specials in country ( I think they do, though, but they name them differently and they are white instead of brown) and you are unwilling to smoke any of the other 12-15 other types of clove cigarettes that they make, then you are probably out of luck. I think Specials are called Supers in country, though.

Hey, thanks for your quick response!! It’s not that I’m not willing, its just I always smoked the “Specials” even after everyone was smoking the “Blacks”. I found the “Supers” on this site inacigar.com but as I look at there Djarum’s, one called “Mr Brown” has the same description as the “Specials” use to have on the box. Have you had “Specials” and “Supers” what about “Mr. Brown”?
